Weekend FEC Filing Deadlines: Three tips from Aristotle Compliance

Election season is heating up, and staying on top of your filings is more important than ever. We recently finished a year-end FEC filing due on a Sunday. Now, the next two FEC monthly reports are due on Saturday (February 20) and Sunday (March 20).

Here are some tips for these weekend deadlines:

FEC filing deadlines never slip: If an FEC deadline lands on a weekend or holiday, it will never get pushed to the next business day. This can be confusing as some state filing deadlines, and lobby disclosure deadlines do slip — but not FEC filing deadlines. A calendar of FEC filing deadlines can be found here.

Prepare, review, and (if possible) file early: The FEC gives two to three weeks from closing of the books until the filing deadline. Assuming your data is in the system, you can prepare and review your report and have it ready to file whenever you are.

Check that your file was accepted: The FEC servers can get busy around filing time. If your confirmation email from the FEC seems to be taking a long time, you can always verify your report was accepted at the FEC Electronic Filing page, which can be found here.

Keeping a step ahead will allow you to handle weekend deadlines easily, avoid late notices, penalty fees, and audit points from the Reports Analysis Division of the FEC.
